Micronesia - Consular Information Sheet
July 9, 1993
Country Description: The Federated States of Micronesia (including the
islands of Pohnpei, Kosrae, Truk, and Yap) is a constitutional democracy in
free association with the United States. Its economy is developing, and
tourist facilities are available.
Entry Requirements: Proof of U.S. citizenship and identity are required for
a tourist visit of up to one year. Further information concerning specific
requirements is available through the Embassy of the Federated States of
Micronesia, 1725 N Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036, telephone (202) 223-
4383.
Medical Facilities: Health facilities in the Federated States of Micronesia
are adequate for routine medical problems, but are limited in range and
quality. Doctors and hospitals may expect immediate cash payment for health
services. U.S. medical insurance is not always valid outside the United
States. Supplemental medical insurance with specific overseas coverage has
proved to be useful. The international travelers hotline of the Centers for
Disease Control at (404) 332-4559 has additional useful health information.
Information on Crime: The crime rate in the Federated States of Micronesia
is low. The loss or theft abroad of a U.S. passport should be reported
immediately to the local police, and the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
Useful information on guarding valuables and protecting personal security
while traveling abroad is provided in the Department of State pamphlet, "A
Safe Trip Abroad." It is available from the Superintendent of Documents,
U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington D.C. 20402.
Drug Penalties: Travelers are subject to the law, and legal practices of the
country in which they travel. Penalties for possession, use, or trafficking
in illegal drugs are strict, and convicted offenders can expect jail
sentences and a fine.
Registration Americans who register at the U.S. Embassy can obtain updated
information on travel and security within the country.
Embassy Location: The U.S. Embassy in Kolonia has no official street
address, but is located in the lower Pics area across from the Agriculture
Station. The mailing address is P.O. Box 1286, Pohnpei, Federated States of
Micronesia 96941. The telephone number is (691) 320-2187.
No. 93-181
This replaces without change the Consular Information Sheet dated November
13, 1992, to include information or reporting the loss or theft of a U.S.
passport.
